About some of Komodo’s amazing Dive Spots.

Makassar Reef, Also known as Manta Point.
Manta Point is a great place to see Manta Rays, especially in Jan-Feb.  It is located close to the northeast side of Komodo Island.  This is a location where Manta rays come to get cleaned. Many divers call this a “Cleaning Station.”  It is a great spot for the patient divers who wants to sit on the bottom and enjoy watching the Mantas swim around the area.  The area is most flat with very small rolling hills which small patch of coral heads and soft coral.  There are even times when you can see up to 5-10 mantas at one time.  You can also find larger fish, reef sharks, and the occasional eagle ray.

Tatawa Besar

Tatawa Besar is a few Kilometers to the north of Komodo Island and about 8km north of Rinca Island (Rinca Island also has Komodo Dragons) This is a good drift dive that does require a bit of experience.  There can also be some changing currents, so it it recommend to have a Dive Master or Instructor that know the area.  The dive is only about 20 meters and is a great place to find many soft corals, turtles, and many other kinds of beautiful fish.

Batu Bolong
Batu Bolong, Meaning “hole or hollow rock”, is a dive area with a small rock that is between Tatawa and Komodo Island.  As far as the surface, there is not much to see, but underneath the water, is like a real life aquarium.  The reef drops to about 70 meters and offer such a wide variety of big schools of fish and coral.  This is a must for every experienced diver that visits Komodo National Park.  The dive site offer so much to see, you may want to keep diving it over and over again, because each time you see something different.  You will see so many different kinds of coral, Big tuna, white tips sharks, Napolean wrasse, and so much more.  Sometimes you just completely surround by schools of fish.   It is an absolutely amazing dive spot, but it does require divers with more experience as the currents can be tricky and sometimes even down currents.  Diving with a Dive Master or Instructor is highly recommended.

Castle Rock
Castle Rock is a fantastic dive location on the north part of the park.  It is located north of the small island of Gili Lawn Laut, which is north of Komodo Island.  Here the currents can be quite strong, but it is such a great dive location to see Black tip sharks, white tip sharks, trevallies, barracuda, jacks, mackerel, and eagle rays.  You can also see schools of surgeon fish, fusiliers, and many other kinds of fish.  Once you get a bit deeper, you get to see a deeper blue that is just such a great experience.  One of the biggest issue with this dive location is the currents and waves can be quite strong, just depends on the season as well.  Typically in the rainy season many dives boats do not go to this area, because of weather.

Crystal Rock
Crystal Rock is rock pinnarcle that is just below the surface, especially at when the tide is low.  Crystal Rock is relatively close to Castle Rock.  You can dive the top part of the rock or dive down much deeper.  In the shallow part you can see large numbers of damselfish, anthias, butterflyfish, turtles, octopus, plus some soft tree coral.   This is a dive spot, that diving with a dive master or Instructor is absolutely recommended.  The currents can be very strong, depending on the season and tide.  You can also see White tip and Black tip sharks, Giant trevally, Napoleons, Snappers, and Sweetlips.

Siaba Besar
A great dive spot for seeing beautiful coral, fish and usually many turtles, is Siaba Besar.  Siaba Besar has about a diving depth of around 12m to 14m.  There is usually not too much current in this spot, although it is absolutely beautiful.  This is also a great place for dive student to practice their skills in the Ocean after learning in the classroom.  Any trip to Siaba Besar does not disappoint.

Siaba Kecil
Across the channel Siaba Besar is Siaba Kecil.   Siaba Kecil has very nice overhangs at about 18m-20m with steep reefs and different layers as well.  This is a very exciting drift dive, so usually you can just relax and enjoy the (usually) light to medium currents.  You can see beautiful reefs, white tip sharks, giant trevally, sweetlips, and snapper.

Mawan
Mawan is a nice and more shallow dive locations. You can see mantas, reef fish, and sometimes white tip and back tip sharks as well.  This can be a nice drift dive where the divers start in one area and get picked dup in the next area.  It is a very sandy area where manta come to get clean and sometimes will stay in one place for a long time.  So if you are the type of diver that wants to see manta and relax on the bottom of the sand, this is a great place for you.
This dive location usually ranges between 12meters to about 22 meters.

Golden Passage
The area known as the Golden Passage is a shallow channel between two islands and is a great drift dive.  It is a great place to see sharks, bump head parrot fish, groups, and other fish that are feeding against the current.  The depth of The Golden Passage about  12 meters and there are many smaller overhangs for seeing marine life as well as unique rock formations.  It is always recommended to go with a professional dive Guide for this area.

The Cauldron
The dive area known as “The Cauldron” can easily be considered one of the strongest current areas in the park.  Which is one of the reasons it is such a unique dive spot.  For the experienced dive, you an tuck behind different ledges and watch as big fish feed in the current.  The exit is called the “shotgun” for a good reason.  This area will shoot you out into a beautiful coral garden, where you may see manta rays or eagle rays.  This dive spot is unforgettable, no matter how many times you have dove it.
