Rinca Island, Komodo National Park

Rinca Island Komodo National Park

Rinca Island (also known as Rincah, but pronounced like Reen-cha) is an island in Komodo National Park in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia.  It is one of the three largest islands in the National Park and belongs to the West Manggarai Regency.  The island is very famous because you can find Komodo Dragons on the island.  It is less visited than the famous Komodo Island, but we still highly recommend it, to see Komodo dragons in their natural habitat.  When visiting the Park, Rinca Island is one of those that should not be passed by.   Seeing a real life Komodo dragon is a once in a lifetime experience for many people visiting Flores and seeing these large creature up close and personal is truly unique.  These giant lizards can measure up to 3 meters (almost 10 feet) long and incredible creature to see in real life and not just on TV or photos.  There are also the species on Rinca Island such as Buffalos, Deer, Wild pigs, and a diverse species of birds as well.  We have many Komodo tours that you can go visit Rinca island on our day trips or multiple days trips to Komodo National Park.

When you arrive at Rinca Island, you will take a short trek, on flat land to the small visits center.  There you will meet a local guide that will teach you about this wild animals and trek with you around the island.  Having a local guide/ranger is required and they are there to educate you and as well, keep you safe from the Komodo Dragons.  It depends what time of day and what time of year you visit the island, you may find these wild animals my seem a bit lazy in the hot sun or can be more active during mating season.  Eitherway, you are sure to get a rememberable experience on your list to this beautiful island.  There are a few different trekking options for our guests to take.  Once you get there, you can decide what works best with how you are feeling that day and as well, how many other places are on your itinerary.  If you choose the longer trek, you will be taking up to the top of the one of the hills that overlooks the ocean and you will have a beautiful view of the local harbour as well.

As far as local life on Rinca Island, there are locals that live there and work for the National park, but at the moment tourists are not allowed to stay on the island.  There are possible plans in talks about changing that, but at the moment, only day trips are allowed.  Living conditions are quite hard for the locals and education facilities are quite limited for the children as well.  There are some non-government organisations that do help with books and educational material though.  Being a local can be a bit different that living in other places as you may always be looking over your shoulder to make sure a Komodo Dragon is not on your trial, as there have been occasional attacks and some humans have died.  This is very rare though, but another good reason, why having a certified Local Ranger is important and required.
If you would like to choose one of our Rinca Tours, just contact us and ask us about how we can accommodate you and devolve the best itinerary that goes with your plans and accommodated what you are looking to do and in the time you need to do it in.  We love helping guests get the best experience they can, and have a once in a lifetime memories to share with other.
If you would like to add  Ruteng as part of your Flores Overland Tour, than contact us today and we can work with you to accommodate what you are looking for and getting the most out of your time in Flores Indonesia.
